Health Meet on critical care services Our Bureau
MUMBAI: Critical care services still have a long road to walk in India, in terms of providing patients multi-discipline support or pre-hospital care to accident victims, point out representatives of the Indian Society of Critical Care Medicine (ISCCM). The 10th annual conference of ISCCM, that kicks-off here today, is expected to discuss similar issues facing this discipline of medicine. According to Dr J.V.Divatia of ISCCM, sepsis or "blood poisoning" is recognised as the single largest cause for deaths in intensive care units, estimated to be about 40 per cent of all deaths in the ICUs. He pointed out that while delivering critical care had to cover more ground — critical care as a discipline had come a long way in the last decade. Dr Pravin Amin, also with the ISCCM, said that the conference would culminate with a Mumbai Declaration, an effort to urge government and healthcare providers to recognize the growing burden of sepsis and provide adequate resources to combat it. Meanwhile, Dr R.S.Nadig Medical Director, Eli Lilly & Company (India) Pvt Ltd., said: "More people die from sepsis than from breast or colon cancer and the challenge is to create awareness levels among general patients and sensitize the medical fraternity towards the disease. Eli Lilly took the initiative with the launch of Xigris - the only drug to combat Sepsis." The company had recently passed on the benefit of reduced customs duty that the Government announced in its mini-budget. Subsequently, the average cost of Xigris would come down by 40 per cent, he said.
