Spinners' body condemns waste cotton price hike

Our Bureau

Coimbatore , Feb. 4

THE Open End Spinning Mills Association (OSMA) has deplored over `the unprecedented' hike in prices of waste cotton, its key input for production of coarser yarn.

The increase in the waste cotton prices and the resultant hike in the prices of the open-end yarn, the consumers of the yarn in the decentralised handloom and powerloom sectors have either shut-down their operation or resorted to operating partially.

The lower off-take of yarn has also forced the open-end yarn spinning units to reduce their production, the OSMA has said.

The association's Secretary, Mr B. Srihari, in a statement, has said if this situation continued, this will seriously affect the export of home textiles which are largely produced using the open-end spun yarn.

The association has said to impart stability to waste cotton prices, the Government should not allow export of waste cotton, especially when there is a shortage of waste cotton in the country.

But, the Government should allow duty free import of the waste cotton.
