Aquaculture Nod for fishing harbour at Thottapally Our Bureau
Thiruvananthapuram , Feb. 4 THE Government of India has approved the construction of a fishing harbour at Thottapally in Alappuzha district. Speaking to newspersons, Prof K.V. Thomas, Minister of Tourism and Fisheries, said that 50 per cent of the Rs 14.86 crore expected to be invested in the project would come from the Centre. Work on the fishing harbour, which is expected to benefit about 19 fishing villages, is expected to commence very soon, he added. Construction of a shed for conducting fish auctions, installation of a water supply system, construction of roads and sea walls are some important components of the project. According to Prof Thomas, the fishing harbour will be able to accommodate over 1,000 traditional fishing craft and more than 100 modern fishing boats. The Kerala Budget for 2004-05 has earmarked Rs 6 crore for the construction and renovation of fishing harbours across the State, he added. Work on the construction of a fishing harbour at Koilandy will commence in the next fiscal. Besides, the Government will carry out renovation projects at several other fishing harbours including Vizhinjam, Neendakara, Thankaserry and Munambam. The total allocation for the fisheries sector in the Kerala Budget for 2004-05 is Rs 42.92 crore. Akkulam Convention Centre: The interim Budget has been a disappointing one for Kerala, especially for the State's tourism industry, said Prof Thomas. The State was expecting financial assistance from the Government for the construction of a Rs 500-crore convention centre at Akkulam in Thiruvananthapuram, but no mention of this project has been made in the Budget, he added. The State Government will, however, go ahead with this project even if there is no assistance from the Centre, the Minister said.
