Seminar on microfinance

Our Bureau

Mumbai , Feb. 4

THE Indian Banks Association and World Women's Banking (WWB) are coming together to hold a seminar on `Microfinance-New Banking Opportunities' on February 12.

The objective of the seminar is to among other things, review developments in banking innovation for microfinance, identify growth opportunities and avenues in India.

In addition to self help group models, the seminar will deliberate on and determine what actions, collaborations and support would be useful in accelerating growth in outreach and innovation and identify key actions, engaging leading banks from India and elsewhere that could help move the products forward.

The seminar will be attended by the heads of leading banks and financial institutions who will hold discussions on increasing retail and wholesale microfinance operations, building responsive, efficient and profitable financial services for low-income clients, reducing transaction costs in microlending operations through productivity improvements and use of technology, etc.

The Women's World Banking network has been active in India for many years. The first WWB Global Policy Forum was held in India in 1995, co-chaired by Dr Manmohan Singh and Ms Ela Bhatt, then Chair of WWB Global and FWWB-India. In late 1998, Sa-Dhan, the RBI and WWB held an India policy forum, which led to significant policy changes.

The WWB network members in India are FWWB-India, SHARE, SEWA Bank, and ICICI Bank.
