Chemexcil targets Rs 61,000-cr exports by 2006-07

New Delhi , Feb 5

THE Basic Chemicals, Pharmaceuticals and Cosmetics Export Council (Chemexcil) has said that going by the current trend, the country's exports of these products would touch approximately Rs 61,000 crore in the next three to four years.

The Chemexcil Chairman, Mr Satish W. Wagh, said in a press conference here that exports of items covered by Chemexcil have been steadily increasing for the past few years and for the current year also the targeted amount of Rs 25,190 crore would be surpassed. For 2006-07, the target figure will be Rs 61,000 crore, he said.

The Chairman also expressed serious concerns about the proposed formation of the Pharmaceuticals Export Promotion Council (Pharmexcil).

The move will affect the pharma exports for all practical purpose because Chemexcil provides a single window facility for all related products which will not be applicable for a separate export council if set up, he said.

Also, it may be mentioned that out of the targeted Rs 61,000 crore set for fiscal 2006-07, Rs 24,000 crore would be on account of pharmaceuticals.

The proposal to form another export body will only mean duplication of the work, he said and added that the move is being backed by some big pharmaceutical companies mainly from South India.
