Standards & Benchmarks Industry & Economy - Minerals EGL sets up lab in Delhi Our Bureau
New Delhi , Feb. 5 EUROPEAN Gemological Laboratory (EGL), which imparts globally recognised certification and education in diamond grading, has announced the setting up of its laboratory in India. According to a press release, the infrastructure at the lab in Delhi includes world-class equipment and methodology of grading precious stones. The certification issued by EGL will be valid across the world. The Indian gems and jewellery industry is the world's largest manufacturing centre for cut and polished diamonds, contributing to 60 per cent of the world's supply in terms of value, and 92 per cent in terms of pieces. In 2003, the industry's exports grew 22.6 per cent to $10.6 billion. However, India's share in the global value-added gems and jewellery market is just two per cent. In addition, EGL has set up a College of Gemology in India.
