Devaki to seek kidney transplant licence again

Our Bureau

Chennai , Feb. 5

DEVAKI Hospital will ask the Tamil Nadu health authorities to re-issue permission to carry out kidney transplants there as a measure to solve its financial problems.

At present, a part of the hospital's property has been taken over by Dhanalakshmi Bank under the Securitisation Act after Devaki failed to repay a loan.

Earlier, Devaki had surrendered its licence to carry out transplants in the backdrop of a battle for its control between its nephrologists and the former Managing Director, Ms Chitra Chokalingam. The nephrologists, who pay Devaki to use its facilities, are an important source of revenue for the hospital.

Hospital sources said that Devaki's management committee met last week and decided to once again seek the Government's permission to carry out kidney transplants. Ms Chokalingam, who is part of the management committee, did not attend the meeting, said sources.

Devaki's managing committee has three members, and was appointed by the Madras High Court last year after Ms Chokalingam's powers as Managing Director were revoked by the hospital's governing board.

The committee also decided to direct the hospital's nephrologists who are trying to gain control over Devaki through a public offer to shareholders to approach the High Court to solve problems related to transfer of shares.

A part of the shares that have been sent in the open offer are in the form of paper certificates, and need a clearance from the hospital management before being transferred.
