US official allays fears over Bill

Our Bureau

New Delhi , Feb. 5

THE move by the US Senate to restrict outsourcing of Government contracts is `narrow in scope' and will be in effect only till November, according to Mr David A. Gross, US Deputy Assistant Secretary of State.

"The recent curb is very narrow in scope and this legislation doesn't focus only on India - it is for all countries," Mr Gross said, adding that the measure would not have any impact on Indian businesses.

The US Senate recently approved a Bill that seeks to prohibit private contractors from outsourcing their Government contracts to other countries to cut costs.

Indian software and business process outsourcing companies fear that this move would affect their business as the US is their largest market.

Stating that the issue of jobs was a "very sensitive" one in the US, Mr Gross said that while the US market was "extremely open", other countries also needed to have a similar policy.
