Trade & Labour Unions BHPV unions threaten to intensify strike Our Bureau
Visakhapatnam , Feb. 5 THE joint action committee (JAC) of all the unions in the Bharat Heavy Plates and Vessels Ltd (BHPV) has urged the board of the company and the Government not to refer the unit to the BIFR and to initiate steps to bring it back on rails. The appeal was made by Mr P.A. Babji, General Secretary of the recognised union and the convener of the JAC, at a press meet here on Thursday. "The board of the company is scheduled to meet in Bangalore on Friday and we hope a right decision will be taken,'' he said and warned that the unions would otherwise intensify their agitation. He said the taskforce constituted by the Union Government had met in New Delhi in the last week of January but nothing concrete had emerged out of it. "The BHPV is fundamentally a strong unit and it can be easily revived, provided the Government gives it the necessary financial support. Now, the unit has work orders worth Rs 200 crore on hand, but it does not have working capital and the Government should provide counter-guarantee for the BHPV to get the funds from the financial institutions,'' he said. He said the unions had the support of all the unions in the PSUs here and any attempt to privatise the unit would be resisted. Mr M. Rajasekhar, the president of the INTUC-affiliated Visakha Steel Congress, the recognised union in the steel plant, and several other union leaders expressed solidarity with the agitating BHPV workers.
