Stock Markets Markets - Foreign Institutional Investors FIIs pull-out peaked on Feb 3 G. Madhan
FOREIGN Institutional Investors (FIIs) pulled out a whopping Rs 436 crore from the Indian equity market on Tuesday (February 3). The net sale booked by them on that day is the largest in the past year. FIIs purchased stocks worth Rs 694.2 crore and sold stocks worth Rs 1,130.2 crore, working out to net sales of Rs 436 crore. On Tuesday, S&P CNX Nifty fell 40.8 points or by 2.25 per cent. The BSE Sensex declined by 74 points or 1.3 per cent. There was however a sharper decline in mid-cap stocks on Tuesday with CNX Midcap 200 declining by 5 per cent and about 300 stocks recording a decline of 8 per cent or more. The previous occasion in which FIIs took out sizeable money from the market was on August 23, 2003. On that day, net sales by FIIs were about Rs 394 crore. Ever since, net sales by them did not cross the level of Rs 100 crore on a day. Of the total 23 days of trading since the beginning of January 2004, FIIs have remained net sellers only on five days. In 2003, FIIs had invested Rs 27,380 crore in the equity market. In 2004, they have so far made a net investment of Rs 3,066 crore.
