Meet on carbonated drinks' safety norms

Our Bureau

New Delhi , Feb. 7

In the wake of the report submitted by the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) on pesticides in colas, an emergency meeting of the Central Council of Food Standards (CCFS) will take place on February 13 to finalise the draft regulations on safety norms for carbonated drinks.

Ms Sushma Swaraj said that the Ministry had earlier put out a draft notification on safety norms for water and beverages.

The notification was withdrawn. "Now, we will discuss the same draft for carbonated drinks and finalise the regulations," she said.

However, she was unwilling to give any timeframe by when the cola companies would have to comply with the new standards. A separate set of standards would be formulated for fruit juices and other beverages.

She also added that the Group of Ministers (GoM) set up to look into formulating an integrated food law has submitted its report and the Health Ministry would be the nodal Ministry.

The GoM has made recommendations to amend the Prevent of Food Adulteration (PFA) Act, which would be called the Food Safety and Standards Act.

As the Act would have to go through the Parliamentary procedures and that can only happen post-elections, no timeframe has been given.
