Ashok Leyland's first consignment of 200 trucks being shipped to Iraq under the United Nation's reconstruction project from Mumbai on Saturday. - - Shashi Ashiwal
Mumbai , Feb. 7 AT the Mumbai port today, 200 Ashok Leyland trucks, `Cargo 912' were loaded aboard the M V Rose, heading towards Umm Qaser Port, Iraq. This is the first shipment of the order that Ashok Leyland received for commercial vehicles for Iraq. The contract valued at $46 million is under the UN Oil for Food Programme, which was restructured following the war in Iraq. This order is for a total supply of 3,322 trucks, 1,661 trucks each to the Ministry of Agriculture and Ministry of Transport, Government of Iraq. The trucks will be shipped over a period of nine months with the last shipment going off in October 2004. The Mumbai-based Sharp Logistics has acquired the recognition to ship 3,300 commercial cargo vehicles to Iraq.
