Courts/Legal Issues Rs 17.4-cr worth cases settled in Coimbatore district Our Bureau
Coimbatore , Feb. 8 THE Coimbatore District Legal Services Authority has settled close to 2,000 cases involving Rs 17.40 crore between January and December 2003. In terms of number, bank cases topped the list in settlement. Out of 1,998 cases settled during the year, 1,184 were bank-related ones, settled for an amount involving Rs 13.51 crore followed by 415 Motor Vehicle Cases Original Petition (MCOP) for Rs 3.41 crore. Besides these, the Legal Services Authority settled matrimonial, family court, civil and labour court cases as well. Of the 1,184 bank cases, State Bank of India was able to reach a settlement in 466 cases involving Rs 6.02 crore, followed by Bank of India with 174 cases involving Rs 91.51 lakh. Indian Bank was able to arrive at a settlement only in one case, but the settlement sum was for Rs 1.25 crore. Interestingly only the nationalised banks appear to have approached the redressal forum for dispute settlement, with the sole exception being the old generation private sector bank _ Karur Vysya Bank. According to the Principal District Sessions Judge, Mr A. Rathnavelu, the Alternative Dispute Redressal System had paved the way for resolving issues, which would otherwise, had dragged on for years. The forum dealt with cases both at the litigation and pre-litigation stage. As many as 561 legal awareness camps were conducted between April and December 2003 in the entire district covering Avinashi, Palladam, Mettupalayam, Pollachi, Valparai, Udumalpet, Tirupur and Coimbatore. The Authority had received 14,683 applications during the awareness camps of which 1,910 pertained to legal cases.
