Letters Direct benefits
The Finance Minister, Mr Jaswant Singh's pursuit of Gross National Contentment is fine, but the common man understands better the language of direct benefits, not economic jargons. The Finance Minister should, hence, take bolder initiatives to provide relief to the middle-class and be more pragmatic on the structure of the personal income-tax such as increasing the tax limit or the ceiling of Section 88 benefits. Mr Jaswant Singh, in fact, should adopt this as his top-most priority if he again becomes the Finance Minister after the elections. R.
