Shipping New Mangalore port achieves record traffic Our Bureau
Mangalore , Feb. 9 NEW Mangalore Port achieved traffic of 21.5 million tonnes during the current financial year as on February 8, crossing the all-time record of 21.43 million tonnes achieved during 2002-03. A press release by the Traffic Manager, Mr S. Gopalakrishna, stated here on Monday that the growth rate during the same period as against the corresponding period last year is 18.47 per cent. He said the port is hopeful of achieving the target of 22.95 million tonnes in the current financial year. The port handled 343 TEUs on a container vessel, QC Pintail-V.468, on February 5. The earlier record was 287 TEUs on September 6, 2003. The release stated that the port, which was thrown open to commercial traffic during 1974, has grown from the level of handling less than a lakh tonnes of traffic to the present level.
