New Products & Services Info-Tech - Broadband Reliance Info launches pilot project for broadband link Our Bureau
Pune , Feb. 9 RELIANCE Infocomm has kicked off a pilot project to provide broadband connectivity to residential and commercial properties in Pune and Nasik. The company is also testing its set-top convergence box across 5,000 homes even as work is on to make the product more affordable to the middle class, Mr V.V. Bhatt, Group President, Management Services, Reliance, told the press here today. Replying to specific queries, Mr Bhatt, who was here to unveil the company's pre-paid services, said the company is right now in the process of laying the broadband cabling for providing connectivity to10,000 families in Pune in the first phase of test. The pilot project is also being replicated in Nasik, he said adding that services will probably be available to residential and commercial properties 3-4 months from now. The company is planning to provide broadband connectivity across 30 cities in India according to Mr Dinesh Gulati, RIM, Business Head, Maharashtra, who said the second phase of the trial will see the number of broadband connections rise to 50,000. Meanwhile, the company's much-awaited set top box which promises to make the home television the hub of all entertainment, information and education is being tested across 5,000 homes in Reliance townships according to Mr Bhatt. "We are right now in the process of collecting the huge amount of data that is required for the project. While the box itself is ready, we are working on the pricing of the product so as to offer maximum value to the middle class. In any case, we will launch only after the current controversy over CAS is cleared,'' he said. The company has already completed mapping over 500 cities for the project.
