New Delhi , Feb. 9

HUGHES Software Systems (HSS), which develops software for telecom companies, on Monday said it would develop solutions and services for mobile handsets as par of its efforts to diversify into newer areas.

"Our technology has already found its place in some handsets," said Mr Arun Kumar, President and Managing Director of HSS, here. He said one of the leading South Korean phone makers and Thuraya satellite phones have started using HSS technologies.

Mr Kumar said HSS had developed solutions in the telecom technology areas of 3G, Spaceway and SIP. "The rapid proliferation of mobile technologies such as Wi-Fi and 3G has created tremendous opportunities within the telecom handsets that Indian companies would do well to exploit, given their expertise in the embedded software segment," he said.

HSS would leverage on its expertise in developing band-end solutions for network equipment manufacturers, system integrators and telecom services providers to build its capabilities in the handset market, said Mr Manoranjan Mohapatra, Executive Vice-President and Chief Operating Officer of HSS.

"We have been successful in growing our products business over the last few years and we plan to further increase the contribution of our products business to approximately 20 per cent of our revenues by 2004-05," he said.

HSS spends 12 per cent of its revenues on research and development. It has filed for 23 patents and established a wireless centre for excellence in Bangalore.

The company has developed solutions in areas such as user interface, applications, middleware, protocol stacks etc. It is also developing communication applications in the GSM and 3G areas on mobile platforms such as Windows CE, Linux and Symbian.
