SSI `SSIs need exclusive policy for survival and development' Our Correspondent
Madurai , Feb. 8 THE Madurai District Tiny and Small-Scale Industries Association (Maditssia) has urged the Union and State Governments to frame an exclusive policy for SSIs to enable them to survive in a changing industrial scenario. It also called for simple procedures and an integrated SSI policy that works as a single-window policy. The association president, Mr K. Ramachandran, said that there is a need for a change in the mindset of the lower-level Government officials "who are still not industry-friendly" that led to delay in the sanctioning of new units, citing various reasons. Inaugurating the 20th All-India Ideal Home Exhibition, the District Collector, Dr B. Chandra Mohan, said that the district administration would encourage small industrialists. He lauded the association for dealing with local marketing while trying to meet the national and international standards. Speaking on the occasion, the Small Industries Service Institute (SISI) Director, Mr V.S. Karunakaran, suggested that in addition to the `Ideal Home Exhibition,' Maditssia should organise an exclusive exhibition for the small-scale industries. The move would provide new avenues for outsourcing and become a platform for buyer-seller meets. In the regime of World Trade Organisation, SSIs had good opportunities and if the manufacturing sector merged with the service sectors, they could become stronger, he said. The expo, organised in association with All-India Manufacturers Organisation (AIMO), has over 200 stalls put up by several manufacturers. The exhibition features a special stall on non-conventional and solar energy sources put up by the Tamil Nadu Energy Development Agency to explain to the visitors the application of alternative sources of energy.
