MADURAI: The Madurai Central Excise Commissionerate has decided to conduct a street-wise survey of service providers who are liable to pay the service tax.

According to Mr N. Minu, Deputy Commissioner, the exercise would be a two-pronged approach with the aim to identify those who have not yet registered and enforce tax compliance of those who have already registered. Excise officials would be highlighting the stringent penal provisions in law, such as penalty for failing to register, for not filing the prescribed returns, penalty for suppression of information, the interest for delayed payment, the right to search premises under the Finance Act 1994.

Awareness meetings are also to be held for better compliance, a press note here said.
