HCL Infosystems on Tuesday said that it has provided technology to the Tamil Nadu Police for setting up a new command centre. The centre is to be formally inaugurated in a couple of days.

Addressing the media today, Mr Ajai Chowdhry, Chairman and CEO, HCL Infosystems, said, "The centre uses a combination of GPS (global positioning system) and GIS (geographical information system) technologies that would help the control room communicate with patrol vehicles roving across the city."

The moment a crime is reported, the control room that monitors these vehicles on an electronic map, directs the vehicle closest to the spot to reach the scene of crime.

Such a command centre typically costs Rs 90 lakh to set up, he added, saying,

"The State Government is considering such centres in 3 or 4 more places in the State."

Mr Chowdhry also lauded the Union Government's recent initiatives to bring down duties. According to him, "We have already launched a Rs 17,000 PC. We are now in the process of launching a Rs 15,000 PC." He said that after the recent cuts, effective duties on a PC stood at 20 per cent from an earlier 39 per cent. This compares with the 17 per cent duties prevalent in China.
