SRI KSHETRA Dharmasthala Rural Development Project (SKDRDP) launched a road show in Mangalore on Tuesday to popularise terracotta water filters in the market.
Manufactured by the self-help groups (SHGs) sponsored by SKDRDP with technological know-how of Technology Informatics Design Endeavour (TIDE), Bangalore, the terracotta water filter is available at Rs 300 for a 12-liter unit. More than 30 members of three SHGs at Kayarthadka, Bandar, and Totattadi villages in the district are manufacturing these water purifiers. Normal filter candles are being used in these purifiers.
Addressing presspersons here , Dr L.H. Manjunath, Executive Director of SKDRDP, said that road show would be conducted in Mangalore, Ullal, Puttur, Kundapur, Udupi, Manipal, Hebri, Karkala, and Belthangady in the next 10 days.
Stating that there is demand for nearly one lakh such units in the State, he said that nine SHGs in Belthangady taluk of Dakshina Kannada district have been imparted training to manufacture these units. Of them, six SHGs are yet to begin the manufacturing process.
Of the Rs 300 collected for a unit, Rs 200 will be given to the SHGs manufacturing them. Since the containers of the water filters are made from the mud, Rs 30 is spent on their packing.
Terracotta water purifiers filter eight litres of water in six hours and removes particles larger than 0.2 micron.
