Cardamom steady on thin arrivals

G.K. Nair

Kochi , Feb. 10

CARDAMOM prices by and large remained steady at auctions in the major centres in Kerala and Tamil Nadu.

Prices of graded varieties were AGEB Rs 425-435, AGB Rs 320-330, AGS Rs 300-310 and AGS 1 Rs 290-300 per kg.

Though there were buying activities in the market, the arrivals were thin as the season is about to come to an end. High-grade capsules almost disappeared and the arrivals now are of inferior quality, market sources told Business Line. According to them, major growers are holding back bold varieties anticipating higher price later. However, as far as the small growers are concerned, harvesting is almost over. Only major planters with irrigation facilities are having the produce now, they said.

The upcountry buyers are also interested in buying medium and lower varieties at low prices. Bulk is available at Rs 300-350.

Export buying has also come down probably because of non-availability of superior grades. Exports in January are estimated at 50 tonnes, while it is likely to be much less in February, they said.

During the current season, total arrivals have been estimated at 3,785 tonnes of which 3,473 tonnes were sold. The weighted average price during the season was Rs 373.39. In the same period last year, from the total arrival of 2,961 tonnes, 2,623 tonnes were sold and the weighted average then was Rs 596.10 per kg.
