Left MP updated on ICWAI viability

Nilanjan Dey

Kolkata, Feb. 10

A LETTER sent to Mr Nilotpal Basu, MP, suggesting that ICWAI has been steadily losing students because of infighting within its council and that Government restriction on expenditure has actually helped the institute, has surfaced in cost accounting circles.

Mr Basu, who represents one of the Left parties in Parliament, has been informed that student registration fell from 22,372 in 1998-99 to 13,106 in 2002-03. ICWAI suffered losses of Rs 85 lakh in 2001-02 and Rs 63 lakh in 2000-01. A surplus of Rs 10 lakh in 2002-03 was mainly due to a check on expenses, especially travel by council members.

The author of the letter, an ICWAI member, has gathered that the MP is raising in the Rajya Sabha two issues that have lately assumed importance: a) Government intervention in the internal affairs of ICWAI, and b) The need for ICWAI council members to secure prior approval for foreign tours while this is not required in case of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India. The latter is not dependent on student fees as their membership is huge - 1.5 lakh compared to 25,000 in the case of ICWAI.
