Bengal sanctions Rs 329 crore for road projects

THE West Bengal Government today sanctioned Rs 329 crore for various road projects, said the Finance Minister, Dr Asim Dasgupta.

Speaking to newspersons, he said that this allocation had nothing to do with the ensuing elections but was part of ongoing projects. "Many of these allocations had already been made and part of the money was also sanctioned earlier."

The districts where the projects, mainly involving road repair, would be taken up are Bankura, Purulia, West Midnapur, South 24 Parganas and Burdwan.

The Finance Minister also held a meeting with the district magistrates and PWD officials in these districts.

He said that of over 3,000 km of roads would be repaired using this money with the job being executed by PWD engineers in association with the respective zilla parishads.

Some 12 bridges would also be repaired in these districts.

While the major projects are slated to be completed by March 31, 2004 the remaining are targeted to be completed before the onset of the monsoons, the Minister said.
