Vintage teakwood for auction

KOCHI: The Kerala Forest Department is to auction 136-year-old teakwood from the world's oldest man-made teak plantation in Nilambur in Malappuram district.

There were 181 teak trees planted in 1868 in the plantation at Kanakutha over an extent of five acres. Out of them, 49 were found dead and fallen and dried during the previous years. They were collected and transported to Central Depot in Aruvakode in Malappuram district for auction on February 19, according to Mr M. Murali, Divisional Forest Officer, Timber Sales Division, Palakkad. About 136 cum of timber was extracted from the trees, he added.
