Sugar body seeks extra free quota

Mumbai , Feb. 11

THE Bombay Sugar Merchants' Association (BSMA) has urged the Union Government to release an additional free sale quota to check rising prices in the country.

"Sugar prices in Mumbai have been persistently spiralling recently. In the course of last 10-12 days, the rise has been to the extent of Rs 100/180 per quintal," said Mr Mohan Gurnani, President, BSMA,, in a letter to the Union Food Ministry.

This had naturally caused hardship to the consuming public, especially when the marriage season was in full swing, he said.
