Chennai , Feb. 11

THE Tamil Nadu Government proposes to develop Cuddalore port on a build-own-operate-share-transfer basis at a cost of Rs 250 crore, the Finance Minister, Mr C. Ponnaiyan, told the Assembly today.

Presenting the budget for 2004-05, he said that the Government was examining in detail the project concept of the Colachel port so that it could also be developed.

He said that following a request from the Chief Minister, the Prime Minister had agreed to take up the Sethu Samudram project as part of the Sagar Mala project.

Mr Ponnaiyan said the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board would invest Rs 1,305.46 crore on transmission and distribution in 2004-05 to ensure improved quality and reliability in energy supply. A policy framework for encouraging private investment in the power sector would also be drawn up.

The Government, he said, hoped to get World Bank clearance for a river basin based comprehensive water resources management project in the coming year at a cost of Rs 2,900 crore.
