SLICE OF HISTORY: Kurupam Tomb, a heritage structure near VUDA Park on the Beach Road in Visakhapatnam. - C.V. Subrahmanyam
Visakhapatnam , Feb. 11 HERITAGE structures located in and around the city are set to get a fresh lease of life, thanks to conservation efforts initiated by the Visakhapatnam Urban Development Authority (VUDA). VUDA is finalising a blueprint to restore these heritage buildings in a bid to woo tourists. With the initiative taken by the local chapter of the National Trust for Art, Culture and Heritage (INTACH), the Heritage Conservation Committee (HCC) was revived keeping in mind the need to protect heritage structures. After reviving the HCC three months ago, four sub-committees were set up to identify the structures that could be taken up for restoration. The VUDA Vice-Chairman, Mr D. Sreenivasulu, and the INTACH local unit Convener, Mr V. Srinivasa Murthy, recently visited AVN College, Kurupam Market, St Aloysius School, Hawa Mahal, Old Town Hall, Kurupam Memorial, Dutch cemeteries, the Hindu reading room and the London Mission Memorial Church. The Dutch remains in the 17th century township of Bheemunipatnam, including the port administrative building and St Peter's Church, the Buddhist sites on the city outskirts, the Round Building, are some of the important structures crying for restoration.
