Software Wipro to expand operations in Chennai, Coimbatore Our Bureau
Chennai , Feb. 12 WIPRO plans to expand its operations in Chennai, start work in Coimbatore and explore opportunities in partnering with the Tamil Nadu Government on the State's e-Governance plans. Wipro's Chairman, Mr Azim Premji, who met the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, Ms Jayalalithaa, on Thursday sought additional land allocation at Sholinganallur, where a Knowledge Industrial township is to come up, adjacent to its existing facility, according to an official press release. Wipro plans to develop a new campus that would generate 15,000 jobs in the next five years and be expanded further. Chennai is a growth hub for information technology and information technology-enabled services, according to Mr Premji. He also asked for allocation of 12 acres at Coimbatore, where Wipro plans to set up a new facility. He also briefed the Chief Minister on Wipro's initiatives in e-Governance projects in various States. It could work with the Tamil Nadu Government also on its e-Governance plans. The State Government has announced major e-Governance initiatives in the budget for 2004-05. Wipro employs 1,500 people at its Chennai campus and has started its next phase of expansion at Sholinganallur, which will generate employment to an additional 1,500 persons. They expect to export $100 million worth of software this year.
