APOLLO Cancer Hospital, with the help of the public sector Midhani, has performed a complicated surgery on an 18-year-old boy suffering from Osteosarcoma (limbs bone tumour).
The partnership saw developing an indigenous `prosthesis' (a metallic replacement for bone joint), named Apollo-Midhani Prosthesis, made of titanium.
A common variety of cancer among children, especially among teenagers and adolescents, Osteosarcoma begins in bones and sometimes spreads elsewhere.
"The standard treatment adopted for Osteosarcoma is the amputation of the limb to limit the spread of cancerous cells. But the current emphasis is on limb salvage which involves implantation of prosthesis that replaces the effected bone joint," said Dr Vijay Anand P. Reddy, Director of the hospital.
"While the imported prosthesis is priced at Rs 1.3 lakh, the one developed by the Biomedical division of Midhani costs only Rs 26,000," he said.
"It is like marriage of a live bone and a lifeless metal. The issue is, we have to see to it that the marriage lasts long," said Dr Somasekhar Reddy, a senior orthopaedic surgeon.
"Unlike in the regular implantations, we don't know the exact length of bone requirement in this case. We need to be precise," Mr Reddy said.
