Water `AP committed to execute Pulichintala reservoir project' Our Bureau
Vijayawada , Feb. 15 THE Telugu Desam Party (TDP) is committed to the execution of the Pulichintala Balancing Reservoir Project (PBRP) on the Krishna river to protect the interests of Krishna delta farmers, Mr N. Chandrababu Naidu, Chief Minister has said. He was speaking at a public meeting here on Sunday after participating in a party programme. He said the Pulichintala Balancing Reservoir would not provide water to any additional command area but was intended only to stabilise the existing century-old Krishna delta comprising 13-lakh acre in the four districts of Krishna, Guntur, West Godavari and Prakasam. He said his party's stand on Pulichintala was clear, as there were no inter-State issues involved. But the Congress as well as the Telangana Rastra Samithi (TRS) were creating confusion and misleading the public. He said the TRS was totally opposed to the Pulichintala project without citing any plausible reason. "The Congress is adopting a two-tongued approach inciting regional passions in both the areas and supporting the TRS in Telangana," he alleged. He said, earlier this year, when the crops were withering away in the Krishna delta, his Government has released water to save the standing crops but the TRS had criticised the move and the Congress as usual, adopted a hypocritical approach, he alleged. But unfortunately, the cyclone, struck the Krishna Delta region later in the year causing extensive damage to the crops. His Government had gone to the rescue of the farmers by offering a relief of Rs 70 crore in all. Agricultural inputs, seeds and fodder were offered to the farmers in the cyclone-hit area on a subsidy, he said. The Chief Minister urged the farmers in the Krishna delta to decide for themselves in view of these developments as to who was really protecting their interests.
