Expressway vital for growth, says Kerala Minister

Kochi , Feb. 16

THE Kerala Chamber of Commerce and Industry has organised a discussion on the proposed express highway project considering its importance for the overall development of the State.

Inaugurating the discussion, the Minister for Public Works, Mr M.K. Muneer, said that an express highway project would be an essential infrastructure project for the development of the State.Studies had established that road traffic in the State would increase by six times in the next 10 years.

The Rs 6,400-crore project, which was showcased in the last years Global Investor Meet, would reduce the travel time from 13 hours to five hours for a journey from Thiruvananthapuram to Kasargode. This would result in lesser wear and tear as well as more mileage for vehicles. He said the amount spent on travel would be less on account of the saving of fuel though a toll of 80 paise per km would have to be paid.

The multi-purpose four-lane highway extending 503 km would facilitate laying of optic fibre cables. It could also be utilised for gas grid and bullet train in future, he said.
