P.S. Sundar

Coonoor , Feb. 16

TEA prices ruled lower and sales volume was lower on continuing concerns over the proxy clause in the Tea (Marketing) Control Order, 2003.

Buyers coming from upcountry markets were restricted in buying and so the prices of CTC dust teas were down by Rs 3 a kg.

Only 30,000 kg out of the 9.94 lakh kg offered for sale could be sold for over Rs 60 a kg this week, an auctioneer told Business Line.

On the leaf counter, while the best orthodox brokens and fannings grades managed to be firm, Orange pekoes lost up to Rs 10 a kg, the market report of joint brokers noted. Likewise, while the good liquoring CTC grades got Rs 4 a kg more, others lost up to Rs 2.

As for exports, there were some useful enquiries from Poland at Rs 32 a kg and CIS at Rs 33 a kg. On an average, the plainer grades of dusts fetched Rs 32 a kg, while the best ones, Rs 42. The plainer grades of leaf got Rs 28, while the better ones, Rs 41.
