Roadways Carrier goods agents told to register under Motor Vehicles Act Our Bureau
Bangalore , Feb. 16 IN a move that seeks to bring the public carrier goods agents under the ambit of its regulation, the Delhi Transport Department has issued a notification asking them to register their business under the Motor Vehicles Act. The move, expected to set the tone for the entire country and instil transparency in business, comes in the wake of unbridled growth of the booking agents, a key link in the commercial transport sector. The Government has set March 31 as the deadline for registration. Under the notification issued on February 4, booking agencies engaged in road transport and goods booking companies have been asked to register themselves to obtain licence under Section 93 of the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1988, as these entities are directly or indirectly engaged in the business of collecting, forwarding and or distributing goods carried through the goods carriages. The Indian Foundation for Transport Research and Training (IFTR), which had made a study of the business, felt that the Delhi Government should carry out this reform to register this unregulated mass of transporters, who were entering or making exit from the trade without any encumbrance.
