Politics Karnataka cabinet decides on dissolution Our Bureau
Bangalore , Feb. 16 KARNATAKA is now set for simultaneous elections to the Assembly along with Parliamentary polls. The State Cabinet this morning voted to dissolve the Lower House on February 23, eight months ahead of its term. The decision to dissolve the 11th State Assembly early was influenced by the BJP-led NDA Government's move calling for early elections this summer, the Chief Minister, Mr S.M. Krishna, told reporters after a meeting of the Cabinet and the Council of Ministers. Simultaneous polls at the State and the Centre, he said, would also keep the cost down on a people already burdened by drought in the State. He said he was due to meet the Governor, Mr T.N. Chaturvedi, to inform him of the decision and request him to take the next steps. The Congress (I) Government of Mr Krishna came to power in October 1999. The Lower House would have completed its term on October 24 this year. Today's move ends the month-long suspense over when the Chief Minister would time the elections, although the Karnataka Pradesh Congress (I) Committee President, Mr Janardana Poojary, has been indicating that it would be combined with the general elections.
