ILO to conduct survey on child labour in 4 States

Our Correspondent

Madurai , Feb.16

TAMIL NADU is one of the four States in the country covered by the International Labour Organisation (ILO) for the conduct of a labour market survey for formulation of a specific action plan to eradicate child labour in hazardous sectors.

Called as the `Indus Project', the proposed plan seeks to withdraw adolescent children, both boys and girls, in the age group - 14 to 17 years- from the hazardous jobs and place them in skill-oriented and gainful employment. The survey is in progress in five districts in Tamil Nadu - - Thiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Thiruvannamalai, Namakkal and Virudhunagar. Simultaneously, the survey in progress in Uttar Pradesh, Maharastra and Madhya Pradesh.

According to Dr R. Jeyaraman, Member-Secretary, Centre for Entrepreneurship Development (CED), here, the survey is being conducted by the Centre in Tamil Nadu and the survey is in the final stages of completion and the report is to be submitted by the month-end.

About 1,000 children are being covered in each district and 5,000 children would be trained for two years and placed in non-hazardous workplaces. A clear methodology is being pursued and the guidelines say that 40 per cent of children should be girls. The survey will also focus on opportunities in the district, gaps in the skill requirements, he added.
