Expand RINL capacity: CITU

Our Bureau

Visakhapatnam , Feb. 16

THE Union Government should immediately undertake expansion of the capacity of the steel plant here from the present 3.2 million tonnes to five million tonnes and later on to 10 million tonnes to make it viable in the long run, the Centre of Indian Trade Unions has said.

At a press meet here on Monday, on the eve of the celebration of the formation day of RINL on Tuesday, Ch. Narasinga Rao, the president of the State committee of the CITU and honorary president of the Steel Plant Employees' Union, said the plant was presently doing very well in view of the boom in the market, but the capacity of the plant would have to be expanded to make it a viable unit in the long run.

He said at one time in the late nineties the plant had run into deep trouble, and was on the verge of being referred to the Board for Industrial and Financial Reconstruction, but it had been rescued due to the efforts of the workers.

"Now is the time for the Government to implement the expansion proposal. Otherwise, once the boom is over, the plant would have to find its feet all over again," he said.

He said the CITU would present a memorandum to the Union Minister for Steel, Mr B.K. Tripathy, who was scheduled to participate in the RINL formation day celebrations on Tuesday.
