Airlines IA Mumbai base to conduct C-check on A-320 aircraft Our Bureau
Mumbai , Feb. 16 INDIAN Airlines hopes to save up to Rs 10 crore annually on undertaking `C-checks' of its A-320 aircraft in Mumbai on its own. The Mumbai engineering base of IA has received approval to undertake such tests, said Mr S.K. Ghorai, Regional Director, Indian Airlines. With this, the airline now has two stations certified for the C-check; its Delhi station received approval in 1997, and currently has the capacity to handle 1.8 C-checks each month. This works out to an annual capacity of 22 C-checks as against a requirement of 26 each year. The balance of about four `C' checks was so far outsourced to foreign maintenance and engineering bases located in places such as Singapore and Dubai. These outsourced jobs will now be done at the Mumbai base, Mr Ghorai said. With each of the comprehensive tests costing up to Rs 2 crore to Rs 2.5 crore, the airline hopes to save up to Rs 10 crore annually on the tests conducted locally. The C-check becomes due once an aircraft completes 5,000 hours of flying or 3,800 landings, whichever is earlier. According to Mr Ghorai, the airline had to conduct 26 C-checks annually with the current fleet strength of 41 A-320 aircraft. The number of C-checks was expected to grow with IA planning to lease four more A-320 aircraft. The approval granted to the Mumbai base for C-checks would reduce the work load on staff based at the Delhi engineering station, while at the same time improving the use of hangar space and staff posted at Mumbai, he said.
