Kerala Govt bars Coke from drawing groundwater

THE State Government has decided to ask the Coca-Cola bottling plant at Plachimada in Palakkad district to stop, and not resume until mid-June, drawing of groundwater necessary for sustaining operations.
Announcing this to newspersons after a routine Cabinet meeting, the Chief Minister, Mr A.K. Antony, said the decision was taken in view of the drought-like conditions prevailing in Palakkad district.
It may be recalled that local farmers had resorted to blocking traffic on the national highway on Sunday demanding that the State Government take immediate steps to get the neighbouring Tamil Nadu Government to release irrigation water from the Parambikkulam-Aliyar Project.
In another decision, the Cabinet decided to scrap the recently issued notification fixing fair value for land.
This, according to the Chief Minister, was necessitated by the widespread concern over the allegedly flawed approach to fixing these values. The public will be given two months' time to register objections or complaints on the rates fixed, he added.
Coke responds: Meanwhile, in a fax message to Business Line, Coca-Cola India said the matter was sub judice, and the company would decide its future course of action after it received an official communication from the State Government.
