Pune , Feb. 17

AT a loss to figure out which of the spellings are correct? MS Word helps you in English. But what if the script is in any of the Indian languages and if you happen to be a translator or working with a publishing house? Help is at hand. Pune-based Modular Infotech Pvt Ltd has launched a spellchecker in eight Indian languages.

According to Dr M.N. Cooper, Mr R.R. Joshi and Ms Meena Joshi, Directors of the company, the software — Spellchecker — is being made available in Marathi, Hindi, Gujarati, Bengali, Oriya, Kannada, Tamil and Telugu for the first time in the country, all in one package. The next best competitor is from CDAC which allows spell checks in Hindi, Marathi and Gujarati but is available only separately.

The next set of languages that would come under the spellchecker include Malayalam, Punjabi, Assamese and Konkani and it would hit the market in another eight months time, the directors said. Mr Joshi said that the spellchecker has a main dictionary and also space for user dictionary where in the user can feed in his own words for his/her reference. Spellchecker is being released with the latest version (6.0) of Shree Lipi and could also be used as a standalone application. Another way of using the software would be through Patrika, its Indian language word processor product. Updates for Spellchecker would be carried out every four months and would be made free to its existing customers, Mr Joshi said.

Shree Lipi's price ranges between Rs 4,000 and Rs 9,000 depending on the number of fonts and has a sales of close to 900 packages per month. Mr Joshi said that they were estimating a growth of about 25 per cent in Shree Lipi.

The company had closed the year 2003 with a turnover of Rs 3.85 crore and is estimating to close the current fiscal with a turnover of Rs 4 crore.
