Call for solidarity strike on Feb 24

Our Bureau

Kolkata , Feb. 17

THE United Forum of Bank Unions (FBU), a body of nine unions of bank employees and officers, has given a call for a nationwide bank strike on February 24 to express solidarity with central trade unions that have called for a strike on the same day.

Mr Ashok Datta, Convenor, UFBU (West Bengal Unit), in a statement issued here on Tuesday, however, indicated that four of the constituents of UFBU, namely, National Organisation of Bank Officers, National Organisation of Bank Workers, both affiliated to Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh, and Indian National Bank Employees Federation and Indian National Bank Officers' Confederation, both affiliated to Indian National Trade Union Congress, might not take part in the proposed strike because of their political compulsions.

Mr Datta, however, hoped that these unions would not at least oppose the strike, which had been called to protest against the Supreme Court verdict on the right to strike, privatisation of state-owned organisations and anti-labour policies of the government and to demand early conclusion of wage revision and another option for pension.
