CPWD urged to compete with private players

Hyderabad , Feb. 17

THE Union Minister of State for Urban Development and Poverty Alleviation, Mr Bandaru Dattatreya, on Tuesday asked the Central Public Works Department (CPWD) to gear up for competition from the private players in the liberalised era.

Addressing a gathering of CPWD staff after laying foundation for 12-storeyed CGO (Central Government Office) Tower here, Mr Dattatreya said the Department, which had constructed several prestigious projects for the nation, must be prepared for competition.

Referring to the CGO Tower, he said the Rs 32.52-crore project would greatly enhance the requirement for office space for Central Government offices.

"The present building meets only 37 per cent of the requirement. Once completed, the CGO Tower would improve it to 82 per cent," the Minister said.

The CGO Tower is coming up on a two-acre plot that housed Praga Tools at Kavadiguda.

Mr K.N. Agarwal, Director-General of Works (CPWD), said the Department took up Rs 3,500 crore worth of works annually.

At present, as many as 69 Central Government offices are located in private buildings scattered around the twin cities, spending huge amounts on rents.
