New Delhi , Feb. 19

THE US-based provider of Wi-Fi connectivity and communications technology, Compex Systems, has announced its plans to make a comeback with a range of products suited for the growing domestic market.

Its earlier two attempts could not take off due to distribution problems.

"Our two previous forays into India did not take off because of problems with distribution. Now we have sorted out problems of distribution and tied up with Rashi Peripherals. We would like to be the driver of wireless connectivity in India and are also planning tie-ups with original equipment manufacturers. While we are already working with HCL, talks are on with Wipro,'' said Mr Chen Mun, CEO, Compex.

The company hopes to concentrate on Wi-Fi products and popularise them by starting 50 Wi-Fi hotspots in the country in partnership with Rashi, he said.

Mr Mun noted that wireless Internet users in the country would grow 277 per cent year-on-year to 1.5 million in 2004. The worldwide market for Wi-fi solutions is growing at 32 per cent and the Indian market is witnessing a growth rate stronger than that in many parts of the developed world. The global market for Wi-Fi solutions is pegged at $709 million by 2004, he said.

"The wireless connectivity is already built into notebooks and personal digital assistants today. In the not too distant future, even home appliances PC and TV will have wireless capability," he said.
