`All notified SEZs can avail DEPB benefits'

THE Director-General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) has issued a directive that exports made to all notified Special Economic Zones (SEZs) would be entitled to duty entitlement passbook (DEPB) benefits.
Hitherto, the DGFT has been adopting the practice of individually naming the SEZs (in the Handbook of Procedures) to which exports made from the domestic tariff area (DTA) would qualify for the DEPB benefits.
"It's a far-sighted decision. As more SEZs come into operation and get notified by the commerce department, the DGFT need not time and again amend the Handbook of Procedures to state that exports to the concerned SEZ would qualify for DEPB," informed sources said.
As of today, nine SEZs are operating in the country and more than two dozen SEZs are in the pipeline. Exports to the SEZs of Santacruz, Kandla, Kochi, Visakhapatnam, Chennai, FALTA, Surat and Noida are already entitled to DEPB benefits.
