DuPont has set up a chair at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, with an endowment of $100,000 (around Rs 50 lakh), according to a company release here.

The first such chair to be set up by the company outside the US will address basic research in materials science, life sciences and polymers.

It would include research visits to the company labs and other centres. "We will use this platform to encourage basic research and development in areas of mutual interest to DuPont and IISc and explore other collaborative opportunities," said Dr Uma Chowdhry, VP, DuPont Central Research & Development.

The Delaware-based company with 2003 sales of $ 27 billion has wide ranging interests from agriculture to textiles. In India, it has tie-ups with CSIR, IIT, CFTRI and the National Chemical Labs besides operating a South Asia Field Experiment Station at Vadodara to test r crop protection products. Over 50 Indian scientists work on hybrid rice strains in a global research project.

The chair is funded by the DuPont Center for Collaborative Research & Education. IISc also has arrangements with GM, LG, Texas Instruments and Samsung.
