Thiruvananthapuram , Feb. 20

THE Chennai-based Cholayil Ayurvedic Health and Research Academy is organising a National Ayurveda Congress in Thiruvananthapuram on February 21 and 22. The Chief Minister, Mr A.K. Antony, will inaugurate the conference, said Dr V.P. Sidhan, Managing Trustee of the academy.

Addressing a press conference here on Friday, Dr Sidhan said the central theme of the conference would be `Research methodology in ayurveda with special reference to kayachikitsa.' Some 700-odd delegates from across the country are expected to attend the event, he added.

The highlight of the inaugural session will be a special address by Dr M.S. Valiathan, Executive Vice-President, Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment.

An important feature of the conference will be a `paper presentation' competition for young ayurvedic doctors and research students. The winner will receive a certificate and a cash prize of Rs 2,000, while the second and third prize winners will receive certificates and cash prizes of Rs 1,500 and Rs 1,000, respectively.

Topics that will be covered during the technical sessions include the methodologies to evaluate medicinal properties of a plant/drug based on ayurvedic principles, standardisation and quality control of raw materials and so on. A lecture-demonstration on hi-tech finger printing instruments in modern ayurvedic research and development will also be held as part of the event.
