Police log in forensic tools

Our Bureau

THIRUVANANTHPURAM: The cyber forensic tools developed by the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (CDAC), Thiruvananthapuram, and conforming to the specifications evolved by the National Police Academy, Hyderabad, have been released and handed over to the Kerala Police.

It may be recalled that the State Police have already made known its decision to establish a Cyber Police Station at the State Crime Records Bureau (SCRB) here to crack down on increasing instances of cyber crime.

According to Mr S. Lakshminarayanan, Additional Secretary, Department of IT, Government of India, these cyber forensics tools, christened `E-Mail Tracer,' `TrueBack' and `CyberCheck' have been validated at the NPA and benchmark themselves against the very best available worldwide.

These tools could be used to retrieve deleted files, e-mails, instant messages, hidden files and computer Internet history from the hard drive. Cyber forensic examination is done on a copy of the hard drive of the suspect computer. The original hard drive is preserved as court evidence.

The E-Mail Tracer does an analysis of the mails sent and received from a computer. Information on the e-mail header can be used to track down the sender to the Internet service provider.
