THE Sri Lanka Export Development Board is setting up a trade centre in Chennai to introduce Sri Lankan products to Indian markets.
The board has leased over 20,000 sq ft space at Spencer's Plaza. Over a dozen manufacturers will set up shop at the centre. On offer will be garments, leather goods, fashion jewellery, processed foods, cosmetics, toys, floor tiles, herbal products and tea.
The permanent trade centre will help Sri Lankan manufacturers gauge the Indian market and plan their business. Apart from retail sales, it will also help Indian marketers to tie up with the manufacturers.
The centre will be inaugurated on February 26; a cultural event and a food festival will be organised to mark the occasion.
This is the first such effort by Sri Lanka and it will strengthen trade ties between the two countries, according to Sri Lankan Deputy High Commissioner, Mr Sumith Nakandala.
The export development board will consider setting up more such centres in Bangalore, Mumbai and Delhi.
South India represents a major trade potential for Sri Lanka. With the Colombo-Hyderabad air link starting from Sunday, there will be direct air link between Sri Lanka and all the southern States in India.
Following the free trade agreement between the two countries, trade has increased several-fold in the last five years.
