IN a bid to provide risk coverage for workers in the unorganised sector, the Cabinet on Friday cleared a subsidised insurance scheme for the 12.18 lakh Anganwadi workers and helpers.
Under the insurance scheme, each worker would be covered with an annual premium of Rs 280. The Union Government and Life Insurance Corporation (LIC) would contribute Rs 100 each towards the scheme. Each worker would have to pay only Rs 80 as annual premium for the policy. The Government's share towards the premium contribution would be Rs 14.61 crore per annum.
The policy will provide an accidental death or permanent total disability due to accident cover of Rs 50,000, and a death other than by accident cover of Rs 20,000. The insurance scheme is applicable to persons in the age group of 18-60 years.
The Government has already doubled the honorarium for Anganwadi workers to Rs 1,000 a month and to helpers to Rs 500 a month.
