THE growth in emission of greenhouse gases, notably carbon dioxide from fossil fuel combustion, has been an area of concern.
Though Canada produces less than two per cent of the world's greenhouse gas emissions, the provincial and territorial governments in the country are striving to evolve a "clean air" development mechanism that would eventually generate business by reducing emission and adapting to future change, Dr Saroj Mishra, Advisor (Trade), Canadian High Commission, has said.
He told Business Line that Canada has set a target of reducing its greenhouse gas emissions by six per cent from 1990 levels by 2008 to 2012, compared to an average of 5.2 per cent reduction from the 38 developed countries that gave the commitment.
The Canadian Government, Dr Mishra said, extended funds for technologies that helped reduce the greenhouse gas emissions. It alsoextended funds to Resource Futures International, working with the Confederation of Indian Industry.
The Canadian High Commission in India is currently visiting industrial towns and cities across the country to sensitise residents on this issue.
